Glimpses of our new red trucks taking shape have been shared on our social channels. They've sparked plenty of questions, and for good reason.

The answer is simple: these seven (7) red trucks are not just new equipment. They are the centerpiece of USAL's new Innovation Fleet, a forward-looking initiative designed to evaluate the next generation of trucking technology, driver experience, safety, and operational performance.

These seven red trucks may be getting most of the attention, but they are only part of a bigger story.

A Strategy Built on Two Priorities

USAL's 2026 fleet strategy is built around two complementary goals: maintaining the consistency our drivers depend on today while investing in the innovations that will shape tomorrow.

As part of that strategy, we will take delivery of 69 new Peterbilt-Cottrell tractor-trailers to continue our long-term fleet standardization program. These replacement units ensure our drivers continue operating dependable, familiar equipment while helping us maintain the reliability, uptime, safety, and efficiency our customers expect.

At the same time, we're introducing seven red Innovation trucks that will help answer an important question:

What's next for USAL?

Meet the Innovation Fleet

Rather than relying on a single equipment specification, the Innovation Fleet brings together tractors and trailers from multiple manufacturers, allowing us to compare emerging technologies and equipment configurations in real-world operating conditions.

These seven trucks represent our commitment to continuous improvement and our willingness to explore new ideas that benefit our drivers, customers, and business. We painted them red to make that commitment unmistakable.

Throughout the evaluation, we'll focus on six key areas:

Driver Experience – Comfort, ergonomics, visibility, ride quality, and onboard technology all influence a driver's day behind the wheel. By comparing multiple truck platforms, we'll better understand which features make the greatest difference for the people who operate them every day.

Safety – Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), braking performance, cameras, sensors, and real-time driver alerts continue to evolve rapidly. We'll evaluate how these technologies perform in everyday operations and where they can further enhance safety.

Technology – From next-generation powertrains and telematics to connected vehicle systems, we'll explore technologies that improve communication, performance, and operational visibility.

Efficiency – Fuel economy, emissions performance, maintenance optimization, and overall operating efficiency will all be measured to determine which combinations deliver the strongest long-term value.

Lifecycle Cost – Innovation isn't just about new technology—it's about making smart business decisions. We'll compare total cost of ownership across multiple OEMs while evaluating the ideal lifecycle for future equipment investments.

Future Standardization – Every lesson learned from these seven trucks will help guide future fleet decisions. If a technology or specification proves successful, it could become part of tomorrow's standardized fleet.

Driver-Led Evaluation

One of the most important parts of this initiative isn't the equipment—it's the people behind the wheel. Approximately 30 current USAL drivers have volunteered to participate in a 24-week evaluation program, rotating through the Innovation Fleet and providing detailed feedback on each truck's performance, comfort, technology, and overall driver experience.

Their real-world observations, combined with operational and maintenance data, will play a critical role in determining which technologies and specifications may become part of future fleet investments.

The drivers who use the equipment every day will help shape the fleet of tomorrow.

Built Across the Industry

The Innovation Fleet will feature a mix of day cab and sleeper models from Kenworth, Peterbilt, and Western Star, paired with trailers from Boydstun, Cottrell, and Lohr. By bringing together multiple manufacturers in a single evaluation program, we'll gain meaningful, side-by-side comparisons that simply aren't possible with a single OEM.

Deliveries are expected throughout 2026, after which each unit will begin operating across our network as part of this comprehensive evaluation.

Why It Matters

Every investment we make in our fleet ultimately comes back to one goal: supporting the people who make USAL successful.

For our drivers, that means modern equipment, dependable performance, improved comfort, and technologies that help them do their jobs safely and efficiently.

For our customers, it means reliable service backed by a fleet that's continually improving.

For future drivers considering a career with USAL, it demonstrates that USAL is committed to investing in the equipment our people deserve.

More Than Red Paint

The seven red trucks may have caught everyone's attention, but the color isn't the story. The story is a commitment to balancing proven consistency with data-driven innovation. With 69 new replacement units reinforcing our standardized fleet and seven Innovation trucks exploring what's next, USAL is investing in both the present and the future.

Follow us on our social channels as these trucks begin hitting the road. We'll be sharing updates, photos, and insights as the Innovation Fleet goes to work.
